Hi,
I am Azra. I was diagnosed with AML leukemia in November 2021. I was 15 at the time and was treated with chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, with my older sister as the donor. Although I stayed in the hospital full-time for nine months, I am still struggling with the side effects of chemotherapy from five years ago. I have low pulmonary function, hearing loss, macular thinning, and some minor issues.
I first heard about the Foundation from another childhood cancer foundation in Calgary a couple of years ago. Everything looked like a dream in the video, so I wanted to attend when I was healthier, to enjoy it more. I postponed my participation for two years, hoping to become healthier, but that did not happen.
I participated in the Getaway Expedition in September 2025. Beyond the beautiful nature, the views, the fresh air, and the clean water, it was a true escape from my reality. I loved the sense of peace and being surrounded by people who understood my story.
We shared a weekend experience that I could never have had on my own.
It is a deep honor and joy for me to have the opportunity to give back to the Foundation and future participants by taking part in this impactful fundraising campaign.
