March 2009: Seigneurie du Triton

Drip! Drip! Drip! A weird winter day, this February 27 in Montreal. It’s raining. But the magic is already operating in the train taking us to the Club Triton station, as Mathieu flashes his cards and the bonding is already forming between us. Eight hours later, it’s still raining. The train stops, the group disembarks and the adventure starts… Greeting us with smiles, the Gîtes et Excursions du Triton team is there with the rain-soaked fur hats. We’re soon on our way to our base camp, the Batiscan, with our baggage.

“Minus what???” The next morning as we wake up, what a surprise… minus 30 Celsius and a bright sunlit day. Our good humour persists during the full day outdoors, despite the cold. The arrival of the dogs draws our attention. On the frozen lake, beneath Orion, the Big Dipper and the Milky Way, eight dog teams rush in our direction.

The elements of the expedition are in place. As soon as we take off, we feel the energy of the dogs as the landscape rushes by us. So does the time! There is a succession of good memories. The nights in the wood stove-heated cabins, where we must rip our boots frozen to the floor in the morning, the ups and downs of our smiles and the hills, a night in an arctic tent, the dogs howling to the moon during the night, the outdoor meals, the Biron cabin and its history, in short, what an adventure!

Returning after travelling 160 kilometres in 5 days, we feel icicles on our cheeks as we say goodbye to the dogs and their mushers. Our trip ends in laughter as a snowball fight, for the honour, pits the Foundation against the Triton team.
